partners

The Centre for Cities works closely with a range of public and private sector partners to support positive urban growth and change.

Funding partners

In addition to our core funder, the Gatsby Foundation, the Centre has a wide network of funding partners to support its research mission. Our partners share our commitment to helping cities thrive, and we are very grateful for their support.  In 2010, our partners include IBM, the Local Government Association, the Talent & Enterprise Task Force, ATOC, John Lewis Partnership, ICAEW and Network Rail

Cities

The Centre for Cities partners with a range of cities - most recently Birmingham, Liverpool and the Partnership for Urban Southampshire - working directly with them on policy ideas to improve their economic performance.  Our associate and partner cities attend workshops, receive tailored policy advice from our team of analysts, and feature as case studies across a wide range of the Centre's research and external outputs.  We have plans to work with Derby, Hastings, Sheffield and Brighton in 2010.

In 2009 we were involved in a major project tracking the economic links within five city-regions in the North of England, including Tyne & Wear and the Leeds city-region. We co-produced this with The Work Foundation and SURF, with the support of the Northern Way and the Department for Communities and Local Government. In 2010, we will be working on two follow up city relationship projects in Hull & Humber and Denmark.

The Government-sponsored Talent & Enterprise Task Force has also commissioned us to produce six case study reports, explaining the impact of globalisation on six UK cities - Derby, Southampton, Glasgow, Newcastle, Manchester and Bristol.

Whitehall and Westminster

The Centre has strong policy networks across government and all three political parties. We provided the research secretariat for the All Party Urban Development Group, together with the British Property Federation, between 2006-2010.

At party conferences 2009 we were part of the Urban Hub - working with RIBA, The Work Foundation, London Councils and the Core Cities Group.  Our sponsors for 2009 party conferences were Openreach, Kapsch TrafficCom and the ICAEW. See our events page for more on our plans for 2010 party conferences.

Business

We have strong working relationships with business groups such as the British Chambers of Commerce and the Confederation of British Industry, as well as business leaders in cities across the country.

Academic links

We maintain ties with some of the best academics and research institutions in the UK and around the world, including the Brookings Institution's Metropolitan Policy Program in Washington DC, the LSE's Spatial Economics Research Centre and SURF at the University of Salford.

The Centre for Cities was part of the ippr from its inception in 2005 until November 2007. We are very grateful to our former colleagues for their support and collaboration, and look forward to working with them in the future.
