Welfare to Work UK Convention
Date: 25/06/2008
End Date: 26/06/2008
The Welfare to Work Convention 2008 will bring together policy makers and practitioners to discuss and debate the latest developments in welfare reform. Through a mix of in-depth policy sessions and case studies the convention will provide the opportunity for practitioners and policy makers to share experiences on the challenges and opportunities of integrating skills and employment, delivering a reformed welfare state, closing the gaps between the most disadvantaged groups by making work pay, reducing child poverty and empowering local areas to play a greater role in reintegrating people back into the work force.
Adam Marshall and Faiza Shaheen will be presenting on Cities and Jobs: a new approach to tackling worklessness.
Britain's workless are increasingly concentrated in cities. As existing welfare-to-work programmes become less effective at drawing the urban workless into the labour market, this session will examine city-regional solutions - tailored to the specific needs of Britain's urban economies - and will argue for a more devolved approach to employment and skills policies. It will draw on a new joint paper on these issues from the Centre for Cities and Inclusion.
