Last month, Centre for Cities launched the fourth edition of Cities Outlook, our annual index of UK cities.
Our research shows that while some cities are showing early signs of recovering from recession, others are less well-insulated against the public sector job cuts and welfare spending cuts taking place over the next few years. Cities without strong private sector investment and which are more reliant on the public sector for jobs will face a bumpy road ahead.
This year we have identified five cities to watch – Milton Keynes, Reading, Aberdeen, Leeds and Bristol. These places are well-insulated from the economic impact of the spending squeeze, and have high potential to create private sector jobs. Given the right powers and freedoms, they could make an even bigger contribution to the national economic recovery.
