Centre for Cities at party conferences

Date: 28/09/2010
End Date: 07/10/2010

This autumn, Centre for Cities will be returning to the three main party conferences – to provide a dynamic platform for economic debate.

Conservatives, Birmingham:
Tomorrow’s jobs: On your bike or on your doorstep?
Date: Monday 4 October, 18.45-20.00
Venue: Deloitte, Four Brindleyplace, Birmingham, B1 2HZ
Speakers to include:

  • David Willetts, Minister for Universities
  • Jesse Norman, MP for Hereford & South Herefordshire
  • Nigel Hugill, Chair of Trustees, Centre for Cities
  • Mary Ann Sieghart, Commentator (chair)

We will be debating whether future jobs will be on our doorsteps - or will we need to move to access employment? How will the spending cuts impact on where jobs are located?  And what part will Britain’s cities play – their businesses, councils, universities and FE colleges – in rebalancing the economy and supporting private sector jobs growth?

Liberal Democrats, Liverpool:
Can the Coalition crack the “North-South” divide?
Date: Sunday 19 September, 18:15 - 19:30
Venue: Suite 1, Jury’s Inn (directly opposite the Liverpool ACC)
Speakers to include:

  • Sir Ian Wrigglesworth, Deputy Chair, Regional Growth Fund
  • Andy Mayer, Liberal Vision
  • Professor Danny Dorling, University of Sheffield
  • John Harris, The Guardian
  • Alexandra Jones, Chief Executive, Centre for Cities (chair)

Can the Coalition crack the “North-South” divide? Is there even a straightforward North-South growth divide to crack? The UK’s growth story is, of course, far more complicated – with buoyant cities continuing to thrive across the North and other city and towns struggling to grow down South.

Has the shape of recession and recovery widened the economic gulf between and within cities and will the public spending squeeze reinforce these growth gaps?  Where will new jobs emerge and what is the role for local and national Government in supporting business to create private sector jobs growth across Britain’s cities?

Labour, Manchester:
How can Labour reconnect with the cities?
Date: Tuesday 28 September, 19.15-20.30
Venue: Banqueting Room, Manchester Town Hall
Speakers to include:

  • Tristram Hunt, MP for Stoke-on-Trent Central
  • Cllr Joe Anderson, Leader, Liverpool City Council
  • Alexandra Jones, Chief Executive, Centre for Cities
  • Mike Emmerich, Chief Executive, Manchester’s Commission for the New Economy (chair)

Labour has a long tradition of support in its urban, industrial heartland. The party holds an important political stake in cities.

How can Labour reconnect with the cities? And what will Labour’s vision for Britain’s urban economic recovery be? How will Labour define the next era of urban renewal as spending cuts kick in?

We hope you can join us for drinks & debate!
